RIVERKEEPER® Volunteer of the Year

We greatly appreciate the hard work of our dedicated volunteers. Each year, we recognize one special individual or individuals and honor them with the Waccamaw RIVERKEEPER® Joy Pinson Award for Exceptional Service to the Waccamaw River.

2015 - Vincent Flanagan.  Vince has been a longtime supporter of the Waccamaw RIVERKEEPER® Program, contributing not only financially as a member and event attendee but also as a volunteer with the Waccamaw River Volunteer Monitoring Program.  Vince took on the role as Team Leader for three sites (Bucksport, Pitch and Conway Waterfront) when the program was first launched in 2006. Vince's background as a scientist and his technical expertise helped us refine our monitoring techniques to get reliable and accurate water quality data and to gain recognition for the program locally, statewide and nationally. Vince recently stepped down from his role as Team Leader after 10 years but we hope we will continue to enjoy his company at our various functions. Vince has contributed in so many ways that has benefited us and our mission. He is very deserving of the Joy Pinson Award of Excellence for Service to the Waccamaw River. Congratulations and thank you Vince!

2014 - Jane and Chris Ochsenbein. Jane and Chris have adopted Peachtree Landing and are on site multiple times a year keeping the landing clean. They also run a kayak tour company, Gator Bait Adventure Tours, and are always willing to help get people out on the water. In 2014, they became the Outings Leaders for the Sierra Club Winyah Group and encourage others to get involved in environmental issues throughout the watershed. Their commitment to the river and our watershed is greatly appreciated. If you are interested in getting out on the water, check out their website.
