We received some excellent news this Giving Season! Rocky Point Community Forest has been selected as one of 8 projects in the South Atlantic-Gulf Region to receive expert support from the National Park Service (NPS) Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program (RTCA)!
Winyah Rivers Alliance (WRA), and our team of partners, was awarded this assistance grant to further develop recreational opportunities at Rocky Point on the Black River and to expand community engagement and outreach in 2020.
NPS’ RTCA program provides locally tailored support to community-led conservation and outdoor recreation projects across the country. As recipients, WRA and our team (including Georgetown County Parks and Recreation, SC Department of Natural Resources and community members) will join with NPS professionals to take on the next phase of recreation and conservation at this unique public-use community forest.
With the 3-pronged mission of conservation, education, and recreation as a guide, the team’s next steps are to expand passive low-impact recreational opportunities such as multi-use trails and to grow community engagement through the formation of a citizen support (“friends”) group.
Rocky Point Community Forest is a Georgetown County park and boat launch open to the public year round. We invite you to join us on Saturday, December 7th for a service day in celebration of this great news and our 1 year anniversary of its reopening to the public!
